At our Brooklyn speech therapy center where we provide therapy for individuals with dysphagia, one question we are often asked is how is swallowing assessed. The test used today in assessing swallowing function is known as an MBS, or modified barium swallow test. The test is carried out by a radiologist and a speech language pathologist. In this type of test, a patient is given small amounts of food with a radioactive dye in it that allows the speech language pathologist to "see" the swallow on an x-ray and assess what swallowing function is impaired. The speech language pathologist can also see what positions are best for swallowing, and can assess if therapy may help you.
Our speech therapy center, conveniently located in Brooklyn, is available to treat individuals with dysphagia with a comprehensive team based approach. We are also available to treat clients at their private residence. Please call us today at 347-871-8533 to speak with a NYC Speech Language Pathologist.
