At our Brooklyn speech therapy center, we focus on helping children improve their sustained attention abilities. One method used in speech therapy is to provide the child with many different examples that reinforce the main concept or idea. The different examples are designed to provide the learning necessary for the main idea, but in a brief format. Allow the child to help choose some parts of the task: research shows that people who are allowed to choose some part of an activity show greater enjoyment than those who have the tasks already chosen for them. Speech therapy involves helping your child improve receptive language skills (including memory, comprehension, improved attention to detail) and expressive language skills (speech, imitation abilities, sentence completion, syntax, grammar, etc.).
Having an auditory processing disorder or attention deficit disorder does not mean a child is not smart and cannot learn. What it does mean is that the methods of learning need to be arranged and designed with the child’s specific strengths and weaknesses in mind. Following a comprehensive speech and language evaluation, our expert Speech Language Pathologists will design a therapy plan to suit your child’s needs and address his goals.
